Over-Locking and Rugs: Enhancing Durability and Style

Custom overlocked rug with reinforced edges

When customers ask me what over-locking actually does, I explain it simply: we wrap a strong thread around the raw edge of a cut carpet so it cannot fray. At my Sunnynook workshop I see everything from hallway runners cut from lounge remnants to full caravan floor mats — and in every case, the overlocked border is what makes the piece usable long term.

In this article I explain what over-locking is, why it matters, and how serging and binding differ from a rough cut — whether your rug is for home, caravan or boat.

What is Over-Locking?

Over-locking, also known as serging or binding, is a technique used to reinforce the edges of a rug or carpet. By applying a tightly wrapped stitch along the raw edges, over-locking prevents fraying, unravelling and premature wear and tear.

This process involves using a specialised sewing machine — purpose-built for carpet and rug work — to create a neat and secure border. The machine wraps thread around the edge in a continuous loop, locking the carpet fibres in place. The result is a durable finish that enhances the rug's structural integrity and adds a touch of elegance to its overall appearance.

Serging, Binding and Edge Reinforcement

While the terms serging, binding and over-locking are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, they all refer to the same core idea: protecting the cut edge of a carpet or rug so it does not come apart over time.

Raw carpet edges are vulnerable. Without reinforcement, the tufts and backing can loosen with foot traffic, vacuuming and washing. Over-locking addresses this by encasing the edge in a strong thread wrap, giving you a finished border that looks intentional rather than like a rough cut-off.

Why a Specialised Machine Matters

Domestic sewing machines are not designed for the thickness and density of carpet pile. Professional over-locking machines handle heavy materials with consistent tension, producing an even stitch that holds up under daily use. At our Sunnynook workshop, we use industry-tested equipment to deliver a reliable finish on every project — whether it is a small doormat or a full caravan carpet.

Overlocking vs Binding vs Edging

Customers often ask whether overlocking, binding and edging are different processes. In practice they describe the same goal: protecting a cut carpet edge. Overlocking and serging refer to the machine stitch that wraps yarn around the perimeter. Binding sometimes means a wider tape finish, while edging is a general term for any reinforced border.

What matters is that the edge is mechanically secured — not simply cut. At my workshop I use industrial overlocking machines designed for carpet thickness, which domestic sewing machines cannot handle reliably.

Where Over-Locking Makes a Difference

Over-locking is ideal whenever you have carpet cut to a custom size or shape. Common applications include:

  • Custom home rugs and hallway runners cut from carpet remnants
  • Caravan and camper mats shaped to fit tight spaces and curved corners
  • Boat and yacht carpets measured to template at the marina
  • Doormats, entrance mats and outdoor-adjacent rugs

In each case, the over-locked edge is what turns a piece of cut carpet into a usable, long-lasting mat. Without it, even high-quality carpet will eventually fray at the edges.

Choosing the Right Finish

Thread colour is an important part of the over-locking process. You can match the yarn to your carpet for a subtle, seamless look, or choose a contrasting colour to create a decorative border. We keep a wide range of yarn colours and styles in stock, and when you visit our shop we discuss your preferences together — dimensions, colours and corner shapes included.
