How Over-Locking Works

Professional overlocking machine stitching carpet edges

Over-locking looks straightforward from the outside, but each step matters — a poorly trimmed edge or mismatched yarn can ruin the finish. When I set up the machine at my Sunnynook workshop, I follow the same six-step process on every job, from a small doormat to a full caravan carpet.

Here is how professional over-locking works, step by step.

Step 1: Preparation

The rug is thoroughly inspected to ensure it is clean, free from stains and in good condition before the over-locking process begins. We check the carpet pile, backing material and overall dimensions against the measurements discussed during your visit.

If the carpet has been stored rolled up or transported from a marina or caravan, we allow it to lie flat so any curling relaxes before work starts. This step prevents uneven stitching caused by tension in the material.

Step 2: Trimming

The raw edges of the rug are trimmed to create an even surface, removing any uneven or frayed sections. Clean, straight edges are essential — the over-locking machine needs a consistent path to produce a uniform stitch wrap around the perimeter.

For custom shapes with curved or angled corners, trimming is done carefully to preserve the intended outline. This is especially important for boat and caravan mats where the fit depends on precise corner geometry.

Step 3: Thread Selection

A suitable thread colour is chosen to complement the rug's design and enhance its overall aesthetic. We carry a broad range of yarn colours and styles, and this is something we discuss with you face-to-face when you bring your carpet to the shop.

Thread choice affects both appearance and performance. Heavier carpets may require thicker yarn, while lighter domestic rugs can use a finer thread for a subtler border. Matching or contrasting — the decision is yours.

Step 4: Machine Setup

The over-locking machine is prepared, and the tension and stitch settings are adjusted according to the rug's thickness and material. Different carpet types — from dense commercial pile to softer residential styles — behave differently under the needle, so machine calibration is critical.

Our industry-tested equipment is maintained regularly to ensure consistent tension throughout long runs of stitching, particularly on larger mats where even a small drift in settings would be visible on the finished edge.

Step 5: Stitching

With precision and expertise, the operator guides the rug's edge through the over-locking machine, creating a secure and tightly wrapped stitch along the entire perimeter. The machine wraps thread continuously around the cut edge, locking the carpet fibres in place.

Corner work requires particular skill — the operator must maintain stitch density and alignment as the direction changes. This is where experience makes the difference between an acceptable finish and a truly professional one.

Step 6: Quality Check

Once the over-locking process is complete, a final quality check is performed to ensure that the stitching is tight, consistent and visually appealing. We inspect the full perimeter for any gaps, loose sections or colour inconsistencies.

Only when the edge meets our standard does the rug leave the workshop. Typical turnaround is 2–3 days, and delivery is available for larger carpets.

What to Expect When You Visit

When you come into our shop with your carpets, we discuss the required dimensions, colours and corner shapes together. For caravan and camper projects, bring the carpet to us for a measure and template. For boat carpets, we come to the marina to measure and create a template on site.
